About the Author(s)

Thomas Mowbray has been interested in birds since childhood. He grew up in northern Minnesota, where he received his B.A. in biology from the University of Minnesota. Pursuing his interests in field biology, he traveled to North Carolina, where he earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in ecology at Duke University. After receiving his Ph.D., he served as Assistant and Associate Professor of Ecology and Population Dynamics at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay. In 1978, he returned to North Carolina, where he is currently Professor of Ecology and Ornithology at Salem College. His past research has focused primarily on forest composition and the population dynamics of endangered species; currently he is studying the composition and social structure of nonbreeding bird populations in wetland communities in Piedmont North Carolina and migratory patterns of Neotropical migrants in coastal South Carolina.
