Mark A. Shields has studied the ecology, behavior, and management of colonial waterbirds since 1980. His research mainly examines aspects of breeding biology and life-history evolution, most recently focusing on the proximate and ultimate causes of hatching asynchrony in the Brown Pelican. He received his B.S. in wildlife management from The Ohio State University, his M.S. in coastal biology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and his Ph.D. in marine science from North Carolina State University. He has taught biology at Coastal Carolina Community College in Jacksonville, NC, since 1987.
