Measurements
Linear
Appendix . No significant regional differences in linear measurements; females have significantly longer wings than males; juveniles similar to adults after Sep (Cramp and Simmons 1983).
Mass
Mass of nonbreeding birds varies with time of year, with the lowest in late Jul (mean 68.1 g ± 11.9 SD; n = 5) and highest in May and early Jun (mean 86.4 g ± 9.1 SD; n = 8) (measurements based on 210 birds from Lesser Antilles, n. South America, and Panama; unsexed specimens with ages combined; Cramp and Simmons 1983). No significant sex differences in mass of breeding birds; males averaged 82.9 g ± 5.8 SD (n = 37) and females averaged 85.2 g ± 5.7 SD (n = 32; data from Alaska in Jun; TLT unpubl.).
