Measurements

Linear

Slight geographic variation in size, particularly in bill length (Table 1). Birds from eastern breeding range average longer bills and wings than those from west (Harrington and Morrison 1979). Females average slightly longer bill and wing lengths than males in each population (Gratto and Cooke 1987).

Mass

Mean weights highest in adults during fall migration (Appendix 1). Average weights during fall migration higher in adults than juveniles at a staging area (Page and Salvadori 1969, Gratto 1983: Fig. 5.2, Dunn et al. 1988). Fat-free dry weight has been variously calculated (see Page and Middleton 1972, McNeil and Cadieux 1972a, and Gratto 1983: Table 2.5).
