Aou Check-List Region

Breeding Range

Low arctic from Alaskan coast (above 56°N) across Canada to northern Quebec, central Baffin Island and northern Labrador (Fig. 1; Am. Ornithol. Union 1983, Godfrey 1986, R. E. Gill pers. comm.). Nonbreeders summer primarily in northern South America, some in North America (Eisenmann 1951, Loftkin 1962, McNeil 1970, Spaans 1984).

Winter Range

Winters along northern and central coasts of South America, primarily Suriname and French Guiana. Fewer in West Indies, Pacific coast of Central America, and very few in southern South America and Florida (Phillips 1975, Morrison 1984, Morrison and Ross 1989).

Range Outside Aou Check-List Region

Breeds in extreme northeastern Siberia on Chukchi Peninsula (MacLean 1969). Casual in Europe and on Galápagos Is. and Azores (Am. Ornithol. Union 1983).
